Minister says Borough Councils will be restored



The Minister for Local Electoral Reform admits that Sligo is an example of everything that went wrong with the local electoral changes in 2012.

John Paul Phelan of Fine Gael admits that the changes brought in by his own party in government under Minister at-the-time Phil Hogan were flawed.

The abolition of the Town and Borough Councils in particular caused anger in many areas including Sligo, Bundoran and Ballyshannon.

Minister Phelan is now set to reintroduce the urban and former Borough Councils.

Speaking to Ocean FM News ahead of the Association of Irish Local Government conference this weekend, Minister Phelan said that while Sligo won’t be a rateable Authority the Borough will return:
