Calls for postal voting system in Ireland to be updated ahead of referendum



A Donegal TD is calling for changes to the postal voting system to allow people abroad to be able to vote in the abortion referendum in May.

Fianna Fail Deputy Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher says the current system of postal voting in Ireland is too restrictive based on modern day realities.

Deputy Gallagher says Irish student in college in England are not entitled to a postal vote while some work abroad during the week only returning home at weekends.

He says a pilgrimage from the Raphoe Diocese to Lourdes also coincided with the referendum on May 25th.
