Roddan departs Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers have announced the midfielder Craig Roddan hAdd Newas departed the club.

A statement from the Bit O’ Red said that the departure was by mutual consent.

Roddan signed for Rovers in 2016 and was in the final year of a three-year deal.

He had been omitted from last Saturday’s squad for the 2-0 defeat to Derry City.

The Liverpool native was named club captain by former manager Dave Robertson, but had fallen out of favour with manager Gerard Lyttle at the start of his tenure in charge in 2017. But he forced his way back into the manager’s plans and ended last season as a key player in Rovers’ successful bid to avoid relegation.

In the EA Sports Cup last night, Dundalk advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to a penalty shootout defeat of St Patrick’s Athletic.

Former Sligo Rovers defender Michael Leahy scored three goals in the space of seven extra-time minutes in that game – two for his own team St Pat’s and one for opponents Dundalk.
