Leitrim man left paralysed after an accident still awaits appropriate step-down care



A Co Leitrim man who has been left paralysed after a freak accident in a gym is unable to leave hospital as no facility will accept him due to his care needs.

33-year-old Andrew O’Malley was seriously hurt when a weight fell on him at a gym in Sligo on December 1 2016.

He is now quadriplegic with only some movement in his head, neck and shoulder and has many other health complications relating to the injury, including difficulty swallowing, weak lungs and high blood pressure.

Andrew has been in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin since his accident and cannot leave as no care facility will accept him due to his complex care needs.

Fianna Fails Health spokesperson Stephen Donnelly recently raised Andrews case in the Dail:
