Half of GPs in Leitrim to retire in coming years

Half of GPs in Leitrim are due to retire in the next five to seven years.

In County Sligo, a quarter of GPs will retire, with 24% expected to hang up their stethoscopes in Donegal.

The figures are from the Irish Medical Organisation, which is currently highlighting the level of retirements expected.

It could mean that some communities will be left without a local doctor.

Dr Padraig McGarry, chairman of the IMO GP Committee, has been telling Ocean FM News of the increasing difficulty in getting GPs to work in rural areas.
