Best trained GPs in the world leaving



Some of the best-trained GPs in the world are leaving Ireland in droves, a development that could result in some rural areas in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim being left without a local doctor in the coming years.

That’s according to Dr Padraig McGarry, chairman of the Irish Medical Ordanisation’s GP Committee.

He was reacting to figures which show that half of doctors in Leitrim will be retiring in the coming five to seven years.

About a quarter will be retiring in Sligo and Donegal.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Dr McGarry says young GPs see the stress their older colleagues here endure because of increasing workloads and reduced resources:
