Fine Gael TD: ‘No cause for concern’ on future of mammography unit in Sligo

Sligo Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin says he is seeking assurances from the Health Minister that women will have continued access to the mobile mammography unit in Sligo.

Concerns have emerged that the contract for the company that runs the service at Sligo University Hospital is only being renewed for another year.

The Saolta Hospital Group says the contract for Action Breast Cancer – the mobile unit – that now visits Sligo University Hospital twice a year to carry out mammograms for post cancer patients – will be renewed for another year.

However cancer campaigner Catriona McGoldrick said this week that cancer survivors want a longer term commitment.

Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin is reassuring anyone using the unit that there is no cause for concern.

A spokesperson for his office has confirmed to Ocean FM News that the contract was initially on a two year basis to ensure that the numbers were there and the unit would be used.

However, he says that he has asked Minister for Health Simon Harris for confirmation that this much-needed service will continue to be accessible for women in Sligo after 2019.
