St Columba’s Stranorlar reach national final

St. Columba’s College, Stranorlar 4-0 Patrician SS, Newbridge

Callum Gillen (11, 12, 37), Ciaran Dalton (43)

  1. COLUMBA’S COLLEGE, STRANORLAR slotted four past Newbridge outfit Patrician Secondary School in Monaghan United FC yesterday afternoon (March 20) to see them keep their Cup tie ambitions alive this season.

Callum Gillen was the hat-trick hero while Ciaran Dalton wrapped up proceedings early in the second half to put the gloss on a polished display from the Ulster scholars.

The Newbridge crew travelled to Gortakeegan knowing that their influential talisman Dara Oke was ruled out due to injury which necessitated a few changes in midfield.

The Kildare side conceded twice in the space of a minute as St. Columba’s Captain Jamie Harris supplied some super ball into the lively Callum Gillen who slotted past the diving Lockman with only ten minutes played. A repeat performance a minute later ensured the Saints doubled their advantage.

St. Columba’s were in the driving seat for much of the first half as Patrician tried to counter attack through duo Niall Costigan and Seán Donohue but some fine goalkeeping from Bradley kept them at bay.

The comeback from Newbridge was thwarted just after the restart as Gillen popped up again for this hat-trick.

Six minutes later, Ciaran Dalton got on the scoresheet when he outsmarted the Kildare defence to slot under Lockman’s diving body.

Nathan Anyanwu and Caolan Power combined well for the latter to test Bradley but the shot-stopper palmed the ball to safety to keep his clean-sheet in tact

Kieran McGlinchey’s side will now await the winners of the other semi-final pairing which see’s two powerhouses of schools football do battle as St. Joseph’s College, Galway face off against Rochestown side St. Francis College.

The tie will take place on Thursday in Ennis at 3pm. It’s preceded by the Minor ‘B’ Cup semi-final which sees Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton play Coola Post Primary School, Sligo at 12.30pm

The Minor Boys & Minor ‘B’ Boys Cup Final is pencilled in for a double header on Tuesday, April 10 with PCC Falcarragh awaiting the winners of Coola and Askeaton in the Minor ‘B’ clash
