Sligo Rovers have said they will implement a zero tolerance approach to dealing with fans who set off flares during matches at the Showgrounds.
The statement follows an incident involving one of Rovers’ own supporters at last weekend’s home game against Waterford.
The statement reads: “Sligo Rovers wish to issue the following update in accordance with our match night regulations and an incident at Friday’s match with Waterford FC.
“The use of flares, smoke and all pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited under The Showgrounds regulations.
“The use of pyrotechnics in the Jinks Avenue Stand has resulted in fines for the club which we simply cannot afford or are willing to tolerate on any level.
“More importantly, their use is a breach of health and safety guidelines which are consistently stated by the club.
“We are aware that no established supporter group is behind their use and it is very much individual-based.
“Action will be taken against supporters found to be using pyrotechnics including suspension and exclusion from The Showgrounds.
“At Friday’s game, stewards and Gardaí dealt with an incident with an individual in the area that involved a pyrotechnic.
“The action was completely unfitting of the reputation of our supporters. Indeed it was reported by our own fans on the night which led to intervention by the Gardai and is currently under investigation.”
