Pro-life and pro-choice campaigns step up



The Pro-Life and Pro-Choice campaigns are stepping up ahead of the upcoming referendum.

A Leitrim GP was one of those who spoke at a huge Pro-Life march in Dublin on Saturday.

Dr. Judy Ceannt, a GP in Carrick-on-Shannon, outlined how liberalising abortion laws will have a huge impact on the health service.

The government has indicated it wants a ‘conscientious objection’ clause for medical practitioners who don’t want to carry out abortions in any new legislation if the 8th amendment is repealed.

But Bernie O’Hara of the Pro-Life campaign in Leitrim says that the march heard that many medics will not have a choice in being involved in the process of abortion:

Lorri Kelly from the Sligo Abortion Rights campaign however says women must be trusted to make their own decisions based on their individual case.

Speaking on North West Today, she said the main issue here is for people to accept that abortion care is healthcare:
