Change to Sligo’s casual trading bye-laws underway

Sligo County Council is updating its casual trading bye-laws.

Casual trading is the selling of goods on the public road or in public areas — known as bays — throughout the county.

The council will soon be seeking submissions from members of the public who may have opinions on casual trading and the areas it is allowed in.

New casual trading bays are proposed for Doorly Park recreational area and the Cleveragh area, both on the outskirts of Sligo town.

It’s proposed to remove casual trading bays in Collooney, Dromore West and Riverstown because of lack of demand.

The council is also looking at having seasonal licences for trading bays in Sligo and Enniscrone, as well as trial licences for traders to use for a period.

However, Sinn Fein Councillor Chris MacManus says he’s disappointed there are no proposals for trading bays along John F Kennedy Parade and O’Connell Street, in Sligo town, where there are events at various times.

Council Director of Services Tom Kilfeather says there IS an adequate supply of trading bays and there was NO waiting list last year.

He also says the council will be placing advertisments about changing the bye-laws in newspapers and on social media at the end of the this month.

There would then be a consultation period during April when members of the public could make submissions.

It would then go to a special policy committee meeting of the council.

A final draft of the proposed new bye-laws is expected to come before the council in June.
