UPDATE: Road Reopened: Sligo murder probe: Post mortem to be carried out today



Gardai continue with a murder investigation today.

It follows the discovery of the body of a young man in a house in Connolly Street yesterday afternoon.

Another man was arrested soon after, and held for questioning at Ballymote Garda Station.

The 19-year old man discovered dead in a house in Sligo yesterday afternoon is understood to be from the county but was living in a rented house in Connolly Street.

About 1:30pm, gardai were called to that house.

The man was pronouinced dead at the scene.

Investigating gardai believe he was assaulted.

A short time later, a 31-year old man was arrested.

He was detained at Ballymote Garda Station, where he was being questioned yesterday evening.

A Garda technical team has been examining the scene in Connolly Street.

The State Pathologist or her deputy is also expected to visit the scene.

Last night, a number of events in the area in which the victim comes from were cancelled as a mark of respect.

Meanwhile, people in the Connolly Street area of Sligo were shocked and saddened over what happened.

This woman was coming from Mass yesterday afternoon when she saw gardai rushing to the scene from the nearby Garda station.

This is the third killing in that area of Sligo town in the last five years.

In September 2012, 67-year old Eugene Gillespie was murdered in his home in Old Market Street, which runs onto Connolly Street.

In October 2015, 23-year old Natalie McGuinness was murdered in a house on Mail Coach Road, on the other side of Connolly Street.

Meanwhile, in relation to the most recent death, Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault on the young man in Connolly Street or anyone with information to contact Sligo Garda Station on 071-9157000, the Garda Confidential line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
