Carbury advance to Connacht Cup quarter-finals

The League leaders Strand Celtic bounced back to their winning ways in the Southern Super League Strand Celtic at the Astro in the Showgrounds on Saturday night against St John’s. The first seen both sides playing an open attacking game and both defences holding solid. St John’s took the lead through Conor Brennan three minutes after the break and it was game on. Strand kept their composure and seven minutes later it was evening pegging when Mark McCallion fired home the equaliser. The game looked set for a share of the spoils but eight minutes from time and Daniel Lang struck the second goal for Strand and on the stroke of full time a sublime touch from Lee Marshall finished off the game as a contest. This was an excellent result for Strand who have lost only three games in a fifteen-game run and Lee Marshall is now joint top scorer on the Ej’s Menswear leader board with a haul of thirteen and more to come.

MCR played Gurteen Celtic in the Andrew Mullen Premier League on the Astro at Cleveragh. Keith Nibbs was on fire hitting six goals in a remarkable game. Wayne Conway and Andrew Flannery each added one goal while Ross O’Dowd and Fiachra Gorman each scored once for a battling and sporting Gurteen Celtic. Keith Nibbs has crashed to the front of Ej’s Menswear in the Premier league with nineteen goals to date and how to good to see this talent hitting the front.

The only game to survive the weather on Sunday was the 4th Round Connacht Cup clash between Carbury FC and visitors Corrib Rangers that was played at Sean Fallon Park Carbury opened their account on twenty minutes when Ross Mc Loughlin crashed home the opening goal and just before the break Barry O’Mahony added the second goal to give Carbury and comfortable lead at the interval. Matters got seriously worse for Corrib Rangers in the second half. Ibrahim Savage scoring twice to drive Carbury further ahead and then Corrib had two players dismissed in what ended up as a very one-sided affair. Carbury now march on to the quarter-finals of the T P Brennan Connacht Cup and on this performance will be major contenders.
