Sligo councillor calls on Pence to stand up for Irish immigrants in the U.S.

A Sligo councillor has called on the vice-president of the United States to stand up for undocumented Irish immigrants in America.

Tubbercurry Fianna Fail Councillor Jerry Lundy is making the call following last night’s State of the Union address by President Donald Trump in which there was a major focus on immigration.

Sitting behind the president during the speech was vicepresident Mike Pence, whose grandfather came from County Sligo.

Since Donald Trump became president, there has been a crackdown on illegal immigrants, including some from Ireland who have been deported.

Cllr. Lundy is now proposing that Sligo County Council pass a motion calling for the situation of Irish immigrants in the U.S. to be top priority when Taoiseach Leo Varadkar meets the U.S. president in The White House on St Patrick’s Day.
