Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin reveals he is against repealing the eighth amendment

Fine Gael Deputy for Sligo/Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin has confirmed that he is against repealing the eighth amendment.

All four TDs in the Sligo/Leitrim constituency have now declared their stance.

In a statement released to Ocean FM this afternoon, Deputy Tony McLoughlin states that “first and foremost” he is a strong believer in democracy and he is in favour of a referendum and he says the Irish people should be given the chance to vote on the issue.

But he states that “being pro-life is central to his own personal family beliefs” and he is against repealing the 8th amendment.

He also says he has “deep concerns” with the Joint Committe report on the Eighth Amendment and cannot support the prospect of abortions being allowed on demand for up to twelve weeks.

Meanwhile in the Northwest, all nine TD’s have now made public what their position is on abortion.

Fine Gae Deputy Joe McHugh confirmed yesterday that he will be supporting the holding of a referendum.

However he said he does retain concerns over the Oireachtas Committee proposal for unrestricted access to abortion up to 12 weeks and that he will examine Minister Harris’s proposals when they are published.

Fianna Fail Deputies Charlie McConalogue, Pat the Cope Gallagher, Eamon Scanlon and Marc McSharry are all against repealing the eighth.

Sinn Fein TD’s Pearse Doherty and Martin Kenny support repeal of the Eighth Amendment, but do not support unrestricted abortion at this time.

While Independent Deputy in Donegal Thomas Pringle supports both repeal and the 12 week option.
