16-year old arrested as part of investigation into hoax phone calls in Sligo, Leitrim

Gardai in Leitrim have confirmed that a 16-year old has been arrested in connection with eight hoax phone calls to businesses in the Sligo Leitrim area.

The teenager was arrested in Dublin this morning and is being detained at Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station for questioning.

One of the hoax calls earlier this month led to the Tesco in Carrick-on-Shannon being evacuated.

Superintendent Kevin English confirmed at a Joint Policing Committee in Leitrim today that there were two similar calls to a supermarket in Manorhamilton in the days before that.

There were also hoax calls to a business in Mohill a few days later.

He confirmed that there were also hoax calls in Sligo and one of the calls reported that a person had fallen from a window at a hotel in the town.

Superintendent English thanked businesses for their cooperation on the days in question and said it caused huge disruption to those businesses to be evacuated.

However, he said it was necessary to ensure the safety of the public.
