113 women in the Northwest traveled abroad to have an abortion in 2016

113 women in the Northwest traveled abroad to have an abortion in 2016.

The figures were revealed during the debate on the repeal of the eighth amendment in the Dail last night.

Speaking last night, the Health Minister said women from every county travel abroad for abortions each year, and he read into the record of the Dail the numbers from every county in the country in 2016.

29 women from Sligo travelled abroad for an abortion, while the figure was 21 in Leitrim and 63 in Co Donegal.

Minister Simon Harris says it’s time to deal with the problem…

Meanwhile, a number of TD’s in the Northwest are yet to state what their stance on abortion is.

Sinn Fein deputies in Donegal and Sligo/Leitrim Pearse Doherty and Martin Kenny have said they are for repealing the eighth, but are opposed to unrestricted abortion.

Finana Fail TD’s in Sligo/Leitrim and Donegal, Marc McSharry and Pat the Cope Gallagher say they are against repeal and the twelve weeks proposal. While the other two Fianna Fail Deputies in the Northwest, Charlie McConalogue and Eamon Scanlon have yet to state their stance publicly.

While Independent Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle says he supports repealing the eighth, but he believes the twelve weeks proposal doesn’t go far enough…..

The remaining TD’s in the Northwest, Fine Gaels Joe McHugh and Tony McLaughlin have said they have yet to decide how they’ll vote in the abortion referendum.
