Irwin says hard work starts now to make Irish Garda team for European finals



Sligo’s Mark Irwin says his place on the Irish Garda panel for the European Police Championships in Prague in the summer is far from secure, despite his play-off heroics.

The Ballymote Celtic striker headed home to crucial second goal, as the unseeded Irish knocked out their seeded opponents, Norway, in last week’s play-off in Oslo.

He was part of the 15-man Irish squad for the play-off and started the game after impressing in trial matches beforehand.

The draw for the group stages of the European finals will take place in March, and Ireland will take an 18-man squad to Prague for a minimum of four games in the space of ten days.

Irwin, who netted for Ballymote on his return to junior action at the weekend, told Ocean FM that the hard work starts now to make the final cut…
