MacSharry against relaxing abortion laws

Just one of the TDs and Senators in the North West is against repealing the 8th amendment.

The amendment gives equal right to life to the mother and child and so makes it impossible for the government to legalise abortion.

But the Citizens Assembly recommends that it be abolished and abortion should be permitted in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

A survey of all TDs and Senators carried out in the national newspapers over the weekend revealed that FF TD Marc MacSharry who has made his views on the issue known since the last election is the only one to official declare himself AGAINST relaxing the abortion laws and repealing that clause in the constitution.

All of the other Fianna Fail and Fine Gael oireachtas members in this region have declined to state their intentions at this stage.

While Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty and Martin Kenny and Independent Thomas Pringle are in favour of repealing this amendment to give way to the possibility of more liberal abortion laws.
