Major meeting on forestry to take place in Carrick on Shannon



The Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association is holding what they hope will be a major meeting at the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon next week.

Gerry Loftus the Chairperson of the organisation’s forestry committee says the abundance of these non-native spruce plantations especially in Leitrim and west Cavan makes no sense for the environment.

He says it’s a scheme that was introduced by the government to simply try to tackle its failure over the years to deal with Ireland’s CO2 carbon footprint.

But he says the land that these trees are planted on absorbs more carbon than the tree themselves:
