Farmers facing fodder shortage also waiting for payments



A Sligo councillor is calling for unspent money in the Department of Agriculture to be spent earlier in the year.

Marie Casserly says that each year it emerges there has been an underspend in the department.

This year it’s around €50m.

It comes as farmers are still waiting for payouts under certain schemes and as a shortage of fodder is facing farmers in the North West.

Independent Councillor Marie Casserly is to raise the issue at the first meeting of the Council in the New Year:

Meanwhile, south Donegal farmer Laurence McManus says that the fodder issue is especially bad in Donegal.

He says some farmers in Inishowen have no straw at all.

Mr. McManus who is a member of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association says farming is key to the local economies in this region:
