Letterkenny Athletic Club Notes

Although there was a lull in the action this week for Letterkenny AC runners, it was a big week for hard working coach, Teresa McDaid. She took charge of the Irish senior women’s team at Sunday’s  European Cross Country Championshios in Samorin in Slovakia. Earlier in the week, she received the European Athletics Women’s Leadership Award. This is a biennial award which was created in 2009 to promote the development of women leaders and gender equality in athletics and to recognise women’s achievements. The main criterion is making ‘a significant contribution that serves as an example of leadership and other values of the sport of athletics.’
In the European Cross Country Championship, the Irish women’s team finished 7th. The first Irish counter was Fionnuala McCormack, who was 12th in her  15th appearance at these championships, which constututes a record. The other 3 scorers were Shona Heaslip, Kerry O’Flaherty and Michelle Finn.
Letterkenny AC will hold its inaugural ‘Captain’s Open Beer Mile’ on Friday 22nd December, starting at 7.30pm. It is in aid of 2 very worthwhile charities- Donegal Hospice and ‘A Future for Michael.’ Further details will be provided next week.
