Heated exchange at Sligo County Council over long-running financial issues



A war of words broke out at Sligo County Council yesterday once again over the Council’s finances.

The Council CEO Ciaran Hayes is trying to have three quarters of a million euro he claims is promised to the Council recouped from the Department in an effort to reduce the Council’s debt.

However, a number of Councillors including former Cathaoirleach Hubert Keaney said this money was never promised to Sligo County Council in any meetings they attended.

The meeting had to be adjourned for over ten minutes in an effort to calm things down and find a resolution between the Executive and the Councillors.

Councillor Keaney says while it’s important to recoup the money, we need to look to the current investment committed to Sligo which will improve roads and housing:
