Leitrim and Sligo Councillors meet to decide 2018 budgets



County councillors in Sligo and Leitrim will meet today to decide how to divide up and allocate their budgets for the coming year.

The Sligo meeting starts at half past nine this morning and is expected to last the whole day.

Leitrim councillors begin their meeting at 11am.

Uppermost in Sligo councillors’ minds will be the still precarious state of their council’s finances.

The amount of money for housing and roads is expected to be one of the main concerns today amid increasing complaints about the condition of roads in rural areas.

Sligo councillors have already decided not to make any change to the property tax for the year ahead.

However, they will decide today on the rates payable for the coming year.

Sligo Cathaoirleach Seamus Kilgannon says most of today’s debate will centre around allocating money for the different headings in its €64m budget:
