Local councillor disappointed local authorities were not supported in fighting abolition

One of the north west’s longest serving councillors says it’s unfortunate that bodies like IBEC didn’t support local authorities when they were fighting their abolition some years ago.

Sligo Independent Socialist Councillor Declan Bree made his comments in the aftermath of a call by IBEC for Sligo and Letterkenny to be given city status by 2040.

There’s been a steady decline in population in both towns since 2011.

IBEC says the north west is losing out because it doesn’t have a city.

But Councillor Bree says he’s hopeful as some people are now reconsidering the decision to abolish local authorities, such as Sligo Borough Council.
