Niall Murphy a doubt for Ireland’s International Rules test

Illness could deny Sligo’s Niall Murphy a first appearance for the Irish International Rules squad.

The Coolera/Strandhill clubman is one of three players struck down by a stomach bug in Australia ahead of the first test in Adelaide in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Murphy is the first Sligo player to make the Irish squad for the test series since Eamon O’Hara in the early noughties.

Boyle’s Enda Smith and Mayo native Pearce Hanley are also struggling with a stomach bug, and are being monitored by team manager Joe Kernan and his backroom team.

The second test takes place the following weekend in Perth.

Donegal’s Michael Murphy is also part of the 23-man Irish squad, while Mayo’s Aidan O’Shea is the team captain.
