Leitrim campaigner says Donald Trump’s language is damaging

A well-known mental health campaigner from Leitrim says Donald Trump is abusing his power through the emotive and often damaging language he uses.

Today marks the 1st anniversary of Trump being elected as US President.

His language on twitter and in public is now well known.

This week alone he referred to the man responsible for carrying out a horrific mass shooting in Texas as ‘deranged’ – saying the act had nothing to do with America’s gun culture but was ‘a mental health issue’.

Mary McTernan, from Dromahair lost her own son to suicide and has been a vocal mental health campaigner ever since.

She says the language used by Donald Trump only adds to the negative associations that people with mental health difficulties face every day:

Mary McTernan is the founder of GRASP Life, a charity focused on providing counselling for people affected by mental health issues or suicidal thoughts. It has outreach centres across the North West including in Sligo, Enniscrone and Ballyshannon.
