New school principal says education is key to getting the best from social media



The new principal of a secondary school in Sligo says social media is ‘not going away’ and education is key to getting the best from it.

Anthony Carty took up his new position as head of St. Mary’s School in Ballisodare,  two months taking over from former principal Suzanne Thorn.

He has close connections to the North West as his father came from Ballinafad and his mother from Boyle.

He hopes to grow the numbers at the school up to 300 and says connecting with the local community is key to this process.

He says social media is just one challenge facing not just teachers but everyone and we have to educate young people about its dangers and positive aspects as it’s part of our changing times:
