Bravery award for man who put fire out at Manorhamilton filling station

A north Leitrim man has been honoured for his bravery in preventing what could have been a major catastrophe at a filling station.

It happened at Mullins’s Filling Station in Manorhamilton last May.

A woman was filling her car with petrol when the nozzle and tank suddenly erupted in flames.

Among those who noticed what was happening was Mark O Hara from Rossinver, who was inside the shop in a queue near the door.

He alerted a member of staff who passed him a fire extinguisher.

While others were fleeing the scene, Mark immediately went toward the fire and put it out, preventing what could have been possibly a major explosion and fire.

In recognition of his deed, Mark was among 15 recipients honoured by the Deeds of Bravery Council.

The Council is chaired by the Ceann Comhairle of the Dail, Sean O ‘Fearghill, who presented Mark with a Bronze Medal and Certificate of Bravery.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Manager of Mullins in Manorhamilton, Andre Paiva, recalled what happened, and how Mark responded:
