People in Leitrim waiting to build in rural areas face huge costs for sewerage treatment



Anyone hoping to build one-off housing in most of county Leitrim face a €55,000 bill to put in the up-to-standard sewerage treatment requirements.

In fact the EPA/EU requirements are not that new but the cost is and it was revealed to interested parties this week.

It’s all because 87% of the land is deemed ‘poor’ and means that the normal septic tanks don’t meet EU requirements because of poor percolation.

As a result many rural builds were effectively suspended in 2010 until some kind of solution in the form of a pilot programme was developed.

Fianna Fail Councillor in Leitrim Paddy O’Rourke says independent reviewers have spent years coming up with this unworkable solution for people who want to live in urban areas:
