Drumcliffe/Rosses Point GAA Club Notes

Sunday, October 15th, 2017
We extend heartiest congratulations to our main club sponsors, Davis’s Restaurant at the Yeats Tavern in Drumcliffe who were named as the overall winners of the recent Sligo Champion Best Sligo Business of the Year Awards 2017. Congrats to all the team – so well deserved. Damien, is this a good time to ask for a new set of club jerseys??
Congrats also to our senior men’s footballers have ensured their senior championship status for 2018 after a nailbiting 1-12 to 0-13 victory over Curry in the Belfry SFC relegation final at Tourlestrane last Saturday night.
This was a performance of character from the team who trailed by four points early on, but driven on by inspirational team captain Neil Ewing, they gradually turned the contest around with Eoin Gaughan kicking the two match winning points in added time, just 24 hours after helping the junior team draw their ‘B’ championship final with a similar late score. Our commiseration to a gallant Curry team who’ve had an emotional few weeks following the recent death of Mairead Davey. We congratulate our senior players and the management team led by Fergal O’Flaherty on Saturday’sperformance. Team: Ronan McCormack, Ciaran McLoughlin, Jude McGarry, Aaron McCormack, Dara Long, Neil Ewing 0-4 (Capt), Philip Gallagher, Brian Óg Murphy (1-0), Stephen Regan, John McGowan, Paul Logan 0-4, Jamie Gillen 0-1, Niall Collery, Kevin Davey, Niall Canning 0-1. Subs used: Eoin Gaughan 0-2 for Niall Canning, Donal Gallagher for Niall Collery,
The previous evening, our junior men’s footballers drew their ‘B’ Championship final at Scarden on a final scoreline of DRP 1-8 St Molaise Gaels 1-8. Eoin Gaughan got the equalising score in added time with virtually the last kick of the game to force a replay after Molaise had led the way in terms of possession and scoring chances for much of the hour. The replay has been fixed for this Saturday 21st in Scarden at 7pm. Last Friday’s team was: Justin Lyons, Shane Creamer, Eunan Cannon, Luke McDermott, Hugh Kisby, David Collins (Capt), Rory McLoughlin, Paddy Gormley, Colin Ginty, Tom Armstrong, Eoin Gaughan 0-3, Joseph Keyes . 0-2, John O’Hara, John Hester 1-3, Declan Gallagher. Subs used: Kevin Dufficy for John O’Hara, Hughie Cannon (Jnr) for Tom Armstong, Brian Monaghan for Colin Ginty.
Manager: James McTiernan. Selectors: Paddy Gormley & Kevin Dufficy.
Commiserations to our ladies minor footballers who bowed out of the Connacht Gold minor ‘A’ championship after losing their county semi-final replay to Tourlestrane (away) by a single point, on a final scoreline of Tourlestrane 1-7 DRP 0-9. It was a closely contested match, which could have swung either way.
One of our boys U16 footballers, Eoghan Smith, was among several Sligo players to impress during last Saturday’s Fr Manning Cup win for the county team against Louth by 1-16 to 2-9. Eoin contributed seven points on the day.
Well done to our four Benbulben Gaels hurlers Michael Carroll, Donnchadh O’Brien, Conor Keaney and Matthew Percy, who represented their club and county with distinction at the Connacht GAA U12 hurling skills finals in Bekan last Friday evening.
The curtain comes down on our GAA nursery coaching season this Saturday 21st in Oxfield with a special end-of-season party for all players and their parents/guardians. We’ll have a special presentation for 4-6 year olds at 10:15am. The U8 and U10 presentations will following their final coaching sessions. There’ll be a cuppa and refreshments for the grown-ups too. All are welcome.
Good luck to Ronan Keane and the Sligo Masters footballers who play Cavan in the All-Ireland semi-final this Saturday, Oct 21st. The team are one win away from an All-Ireland final appearance against either Donegal or Mayo.
Drumcliffe Handball Club coaching continues every Saturday morning in Oxfield from 9:30am to 12:30pm. See the handball club’s Facebook page for session times etc.
