TD accuses government of ‘spinning good news story’ on mackerel quotas

A Donegal TD has accused the government of ‘spinning a good news story’ in relation to mackerel quota for fishermen.

A number of politicians had said the recent decision not to change mackerel fishing quotas is good news for the fishing industry in the north west.

But Fianna Fail Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher says there will be a fall of 17,200 tonne, a 20% reduction, in the mackerel catch.

This, he says, will, in money terms, mean a loss of more than €17m to the fishing sector.

He claims it will have devastating affects on the sector and on employment in the north west.
