Rovers move out of relegation zone with Bohs win

The 25th minute sending-off of Keith Ward proved costly for Bohemians as Sligo Rovers moved out of the relegation zone.

Ward saw a straight red for kicking out after he was fouled by Craig Roddan, as Vinny Faherty’s early strike proved the difference.

Faherty’s second goal for the club came after just nine minutes, as he got the vital touch close to goal to head Regan Donelon’s corner to the net.

Rovers had a great chance to double that lead from another Donelon delivery five minutes later, but John Russell’s close-range flick looped over the crossbar.

Daniel Kearns then broke behind the Bohs defence and into the area, but delayed his shot, and Gypsies captain Derek Pender came back to make the block.

Bohs had started to get on top with Ward, Dinny Corcoran and Ishamil Akinade having chances, before Ward was shown red.

McCabe and substitute Greg Moorhouse had great chances for Rovers in the second half, but they needed a last-ditch Donelon challenge on Akinade to prevent Bohs pulling level at the end.

The striker raced onto Dinny Corcoran’s flick and looked certain to score, before Donelon’s intervention ensured keeper Shaun Patton kept his first clean sheet for the club.
