Donegal County Council says it responded to flooding in around ten areas in south Donegal yesterday with the Killybegs and Kilcar areas worst affected.

The clean-up operations continue there today.

The Council says a combination of prolonged heavy rain and the high tide at 6pm contributed to the rising waters.

In a statement to Ocean FM News this lunchtime, Donegal County Council says it has responded to flooding incidents in five main areas in Killybegs and Kilcar yesterday evening.

In addition to this it was called out to flooding on roads at Binroe, at the Five points, on the N56 Five Points to Ardara road, Malinmore and Largy.

The Donegal and Killybegs Fire Brigades were on the scene for over four hours.

The Council says the heavy rain coupled with the high tide at around 6pm led to the flooding along Shore Road backing up along the river into Bridge Street area where a number of properties were flooded.

Killybegs Fire Brigade attended Fintra National School where it remained for two hours to try and help alleviate flooding there.

It then went to help the Donegal Town Fire Brigade at Bridge Street in Killybegs. Sand bagging and pumping operations took place at both locations.

Both brigades were on the ground until quarter past ten last night.

In Kilcar, the Garage opposite the National School was also flooded.

Sean Campbell from Kilcar told North West Today that the river needs to be dredged and he also says the bridges in the area are a concern:
