Sligo councillor is calling for ‘talking’ fuel pumps

A Sligo councillor is calling for ‘talking’ fuel pumps that tell people whether they are getting diesel or unleaded petrol when they top-up at filling stations.

Fine Gael Councillor Dara Mulvey says a twenty euro fill-up of the wrong fuel can cause damage that could result in thousands to repair.

Cllr Mulvey will propose at Monday’s meeting of Sligo County Council that the National Standards Authority in Ireland insists that all fuel pumps must have ‘voice activation’ saying whether the pump is diesel or unleaded petrol.

He wants the voice to come on immediately when the fuel pump handle is lifted and before any fuel goes into the tank of a vehicle.

He says many filling stations already have this — but he wants to see it extended to all.
