Homelessness ‘far worse than what figures show’



The Homeless Co-Ordinator with Sligo Social Services says the homelessness problem in the North West is far worse than what new figures reveal.

Finbar Sweeney says their agency – which is only one of a number in this region – provides emergency night shelters for families and individuals.

New figures from the Department of Housing and Local Government reveal there are just three homeless families and 42 homeless adults in the North West.

The highest figure is in Sligo where 25 adults were recorded homeless on the dates the survey was carried out on the week of the 21st to the 27th of August last month.

The figure is 17 in Co. Donegal was noone was recorded without a home in county Leitrim.
