It could be time for a campaign to set up a light rail service between Longford and Sligo.

That’s according to Fianna Fail Councillor in Sligo Seamus Kilgannon who has renewed his calls for Irish Rail to add an early morning train from Longford to its service.

The latest Census figures reveal that there are more commuters coming into Sligo to work than leaving it yet just over 1% of these people are using public transport.

Councillor Kilgannon says the current train from Longford only arrives in Sligo at 11am and workers and students from the Midlands would use an earlier one.

His calls were supported at a meeting of the Municipal District in Sligo yesterday.
