Sligo kickboxer wins gold at European championships in Macedonia



Sligo’s Ruth Conlon-Oates has claimed a gold medal at the WAKO European Kickboxing Championships for Juniors and Cadets.

The Collooney Kickboxing Club member defeated Great Britain’s Asia Georghiou in the final of the -60kg light contact in Skopje, Macedonia today.

She follows in the footsteps of fellow club members Aine and Dessie Leonard, who both won gold at the championships in previous years.

The 15-year-old was one of three members of the club that represented Ireland at the championships, along with Cathal Monds and Kyle Keaney.

The Mercy College student previously won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

The event in Macedonia features 1,563 competitors from 37 countries.
