Sligo Councillor calls for Owenmore survey to be extended



A Sligo councillor is calling for a new survey being carried out on the Owenmore river in South Sligo to include the whole river system.

The survey was approved just last month by Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and it aims to identify the effects of flooding and the drainage of the river.

However, it is currently only focusing on the upper portion in the Gurteen/Ballymote areas.

Sinn Fein’s Thomas Healy says carrying out drainage work on the upper portion will only lead to increased flooding downriver in the Collooney, Ballygawley and Ballisodare areas.

And he says this may leave the council open to claims for damages.
