New pilot hedge-cutting scheme for Leitrim

A new pilot roadside hedgecutting scheme is being introduced in County Leitrim.

Under the scheme, landowers and farmers will get a grant of €50 per kilometre to cut hedges along roads, with priority being given to routes used by vehicles such as school buses.

Applications for the scheme open today.

Fianna Fail Councillor in south Sligo Keith Henry has a motion down for Monday’s meeting of Sligo County Council calling for a similar scheme.

Leitrim Fine Gael Councillor Frank Dolan says the money is there for the scheme in his county; it will come out of the council’s roads budget.

He says it does not involve a major amount of money.
