World champ Mona McSharry narrowly misses out on third medal

World champion Mona McSharry was desperately unlucky not to add to her medal haul at the World Junior Championships in Indianapolis last night.

The Grange 17-year-old finished fourth in the 200 metres final after putting in a huge effort, leading from the start to the turn at 150 metres.

But the effort of ten highly competitive races in the space of six days may have taken its toll in the last 50 metres as USA’s Zoe Bartel powered through for the win ahead of her USA team-mate Ella Nelson.

Getting to the wall just two hundredths of a second ahead of McSharry, Great Britain’s Anabel Guye-Johnson claimed bronze.

McSharry’s time of 2 minutes 27.69 seconds was just outside her Irish Record of 2:27.44 – the time that won her silver at the European Junior Championships earlier this year.
