Aodh Ruadh GAA Club Notes

Club meeting

The monthly club executive meeting takes place this Thursday at 8.30pm in Aras Aoidh. All committee members are asked to attend.

Football

Aodh Ruadh just had too much in the tank for their division 4 opponents on Saturday afternoon. The Ernesiders quickly skipped into 2-8 to 0-1 lead with 10 minutes on the clock. Johnny Gethins and Johnny Gallagher were the men raising the green flags. The scoring pace slowed slightly in the second quarter, but another two goals were tagged on. First Darren Drummond palmed in after a sweeping move. Then Seamus Kane added the fourth giving Ballyshannon a 4-9 to 0-6 lead at half-time. Aodh Ruadh took a while to get going in the second half, but were back in business when Johnny Gallagher hammered home his second goal after David Dolan played him in. David Dolan went on to blast home a sixth goal to give Aodh Ruadh at 6-14 to 0-8 victory as the Ernesiders made it three wins from three in the intermediate championship group stages. A facile win for Aodh Ruadh in the end in a fixture which raises some questions about championship structures. The Ernesiders won all their individual battles with Johnny Gallagher, Johnny Gethins and Damien Cleary the stand out performers in a one sided affair. The game was also notable for seeing our wrecking ball player manager James O’Donnell make his first appearance of season as second half substitute. We have a full report and pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The Aodh Ruadh reserves were much too strong for Carndonagh on Saturday evening in their third round championship clash. Two Dermot Slevin points and a Sean Taylor score put the visitors in front before Carn managed their first score. Kerry Ryan restored the three point lead, but for all Aodh Ruadh’s possession the hosts managed to bring it back to 0-4 to 0-3 by the middle of the half. However, a late flurry in the last seven minutes opened up a 0-10 to 0-3 half-time lead, the points coming from Rory Cullen, a pair from Oisin Rooney, a second from Taylor and one each from Cáelán Drummond and Martin Larkin. The blitz continued in the second half as Aodh Ruadh stormed another 3-8 to just a single score at the end from the hosts to see the game out comfortably at 3-18 to 1-3. The first of the goals came from Diarmaid McInerney after being played through by Taylor seven minutes into the half. The second came minutes later from Oisin Roper after Rooney did well to turn two men to set up the goal. Rooney then got his reward of a goal five minutes from the end. The win sees Aodh Ruadh second in the group on five points based on Milford’s superior score difference, but safely through to the knock out stages. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The championship draws took place on Monday evening and saw Aodh Ruadh drawn against Buncrana in both the senior and reserve quarter finals. Before that though, it is back to league fare this weekend with the trip to Ballybofey on Saturday. The reserve match throws in at 6pm with the senior going off at 7.30pm.

The under 16s had a useful outing against Devenish on Monday evening as they prepared for their championship opener against Naomh Ultan next week. David Doherty was exceptional, with Fermanagh county net minder and Devenish mentor Thomas Treacy picking him out as our man of the match. Another who worked his socks off was Niall Monaghan, with Shane Brady a pleasure to watch from frees and Shane Gillespie going beyond the call of duty to do major damage in the forward line. Thanks to Devenish for the challenge. Next up for the lads in their pre-championship preparation is a game against Drumcliffe Rosses Point this Friday down at their Oxfield grounds. We leave Ballyshannon at 5.40pm to be in there for a 7pm throw in.

The under 14s have a challenge this Tuesday, 29th August at 7pm in Father Tierney Park against St Mary’s, Sligo. That game is in preparation for the team’s biggest game this season so far. They take on Malin this Friday, 1st September at 7pm in Father Tierney Park in the county championship quarter-final. It would be great to see a big showing of vocal Ballyshannon support for this great team of lads on the night.

On Saturday the under 13s are due to host Naomh Conaill at 12 noon.

This Saturday the under 10s are on their travels once more as they head to Castlebar for a blitz. Players are to be in at Father Tierney Park for 7.30am for the bus down to Mayo. With the trip to Castlebar there’ll be no under 10 training this Friday. Training continues from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on Monday.

Ladies

The under 16s have a challenge match this Thursday against Derrygonnelly at 7pm. All players are to be at the park for 6.15pm.

Aodh Ruadh under 13s got their league campaign off to a positive start last Saturday against a good and spirited Ardara side. A goal from Annie Keon followed by a Niamh Hughes point got Aodh Ruadh off the mark. After that a string of scores from the strike force of Ciara Gillespie and Evelyn Rose Gallagher helped the hosts to a 3-5 to 0-1 interval lead. Ardara used the wind well in the second half and got more joy in the attack. Aodh Ruadh continued to score well too though with Aoibheann McGarrigle and Áine Hill also getting on the score sheet with Michaela McCaffrey capping a fine second half display with the closing score of the game, a well struck goal. The final whistle saw it end 6-10 to 2-3. The Shamettes had fine displays all over the pitch. Emer O’Brien was back to some of her best form, turning over an amount of ball and was typically unselfish in her distribution. Ciara Gillespie’s unerring accuracy was a serious asset while Evelyn Rose Gallagher scoring instincts will see her trouble many a defence this year yet. Aoibheann McGarrigle also shone brightly at half forward. Grainne Maguire was an absolute rock in the defence with Ellie Danagher growing with every game. The subs played a big role with Lucy Barden, Niamh McGloin and Michaela McCaffrey among those making big impacts on their introduction. Next up for Aodh Ruadh is training on Tuesday, 28th August and Thursday at 7pm. On Saturday, 2nd September we travel to Buncrana for our second league match. We will need parents to drive to the game. We will be convening at Father Tierney Park at 3.30pm to arrange lifts down to Buncrana with the game throwing in down at Scarvey at 6.30pm. Anyone not on the WhatsApp group should contact John Hughes on 087-6431805 to be added.

Hurling

Well done to Adam Clarke, Senan Rooney and Adam Rami who were on the Donegal under 16 team who did well at the All-Ireland Blitzes in Westmeath on Saturday. They defeated Wicklow and Roscommon and lost to Antrim in the group stages. They qualified for the Shield Final where they lost narrowly to Kildare. It was a very good standard of hurling and interestingly some of the Donegal games were refereed by top senior inter-county referee James McGrath.

The under 16s are away to Burt this Thursday in the league.

The under 12s got back to winning ways with a comfortable win on Sunday away to Setanta.
