Under 12 Final

Best wishes to our under 12 boys who play Tubbercurry/Cloonacool in the Shield Final this evening (Tuesday)in Markievicz Park. Throw in is at 6.15.

Under 14 Girls

The under 14 girls began their championship with a home win over Geevagh on a score-line of 7-09 to 2-06. Settling quickly into the game the girls were on the attack from early on and led by 3-04 to 0-05 at half time, with Shona Dalton in top form contributing 2-02.There were first half points too from Keri Mitchel and Amy Deering, while Aoife Gormley scored her first u14 score when slotting the ball to the net for Coolera-Strandhill’s opening goal. Any lapse in the defence was dealt with by Nessa O’ Sullivan in the Coolera goals, and her clearances were to be very effective.

The second half saw Cliodhna O’ Sullivan and Shona Dalton move to midfield, while Amy Deering and Beibhinn Harte moved to centre back and centre forward respectively. This was to pay huge dividends as Cliodhna’s direct running caused the visitors’ defence endless problems. She would go on to score three second half points, while Beibhinn’s switch to the forwards yielded 1-01. There were goals too from Amy Deering, Luna Simeoni and Clodagh Martyn, while Shona added a point to her tally.

The defence, led by Cliodhna Davitt and well supported by Amy Hampson, stifled the majority of the visitors’ attacks, but Geevagh did manage two late goals. Team; Nessa O’ Sullivan, Amy Hampson, Ciara Lindsay, Cliodhna Davitt, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan (0-03), Holly Gilligan, Amy Deering (1-01), Beibhinn Harte (1-01), Keri Mitchel (0-01), Shona Dalton (2-03), Anna Callaghan, Aoife Gormley (1-00), Mary-Kate McPartland, subs; Emma O’ Loughlin, Clodagh Martyn (1-00), Luna Simeoni (1-00).

Congratulations to the U12 hurlers who won the County Shield Final by beating Tubbercurry 7 scores to 4 scores in Markievicz Park on Tuesday evening. Inspired by their weekend trip to the All Ireland Hurling Semi-Final in Croke Park, the Coolera/Strandhill boys hit the ground running, attacking the Tubbercurry goal from the throw in. Unlucky with a couple of early efforts from Mark Keane and Tadgh Doggett it took a point from Oisin Hennessy off his less favoured side, under pressure, to settle the boys into the final. This was shortly followed by another point from captain Tadgh Doggett. Tubbercurry then started to run at the Coolera/Strandhill defence and levelled the scores at 2 each. Cathal Hughes showed his bravery in goal by making a couple of good saves to keep Tubber at bay. Strandhill then upped the ante and scored 2 more points from midfield dynamo Oisin Hennessy and centre back Tadgh Doggett from long range frees. Tubbercurry rallied briefly to get another score but Oisin Hennessy scored another point from play receiving a pass from midfield partner Shane O’Loughlin to leave just two points between the teams at halftime 5 scores to 3 scores.
The second half started well for Coolera/Strandhill with Oisin Hennessy scoring another point from a free after a foul on Ultan Bree. Again Tubbercurry rallied and pulled back another score to make it 6-4. At this stage the defence came into its own with Cathal Hughes again throwing himself in front of shots, helped by Aidan Moran and Jack McDaniel who cleared their lines well. Then a Coolera/Strandhill breakaway attack with some fine link play between Shane O’Loughlin and Mark Keane set up Tadgh Dogget for a point stretching the lead to 7 scores to 4 scores.

It was fitting that the defence did not concede in the last five minutes with some fine interceptions by Kevin Davitt, Aidan Moran and relieving clearances by Oisin Whelan and Jack McDaniel easing the pressure on the Coolera/Strandhill goal. When referee John Doyle blew the final whistle, Coolera/Strandhill triumphed on a score-line of 7 scores to 4 in a hard fought final that was played in the best traditions of Fair Play.

Both teams were a credit to their coaches in the manner that they played and the way that they conducted themselves after the final whistle during the presentation. The future looks bright for these young hurlers as the majority of the team will be underage again next year.

Coolera/Strandhill: Cathal Hughes:Aidan Moran, Jack McDaniel, Tadgh Doggett (0-3), Kevin Davitt, Oisin Hennesy (0-4), Shane O’Loughlin, Jack Feeney, Mark Keane, Oisin Whelan, Ronan Adams: subs Ultan Bree, Finn McDaniel, James Lynch, Aidan McLoughlin, Thomas Kinane.

Under 16 Girls

The under 16 girls made the trip to Cloonacool for the second round of the championship where they met C.T. Gaels. Starting well, despite missing some key players, the girls put some good moves together and thanks to 1-01 from Eva Schoen in the early stages, they found themselves leading after ten minutes. The home side settled however, and after some good attacking play the score read 4-02 to 1-02 in favour of CT Gaels. Further points from Amy Hampson and Eva Schoen would see the home side leading 4-05 to 1-03 at half time. Our girls started the second half with an increased intensity and their attacking play led to four unanswered points from Eva, Gráinne Redmond, Éilis Burke and Eimear Callaghan, added to by a goal from Aislinn Doggett left just two goals between the sides. The home side rallied however and a lucky break in the form of a deflected own goal, in addition to some pointed frees extended the lead and our girls would eventually lose out on a scoreline of 6-10 to 2-07. Though suffering defeat there were many fine performances, particularly from Holly Gilligan and Gráinne Redmond in defence, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan in midfield, while Eva Schoen, Éilis Burke and Róisin Heneghan caused the home defence endless problems. Next up is a home tie with St. Michael’s on Thursday evening. Team; Sarah Lindsay, Holly Gilligan, Eimear Callaghan (0-01), Aislinn Doggett (1-00), Gráinne Redmond (0-01), Nadine Deering, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan, Ruth Conlon-Oates, Róisin Heneghan, Sarah McCormack, Éilis Burke (0-01), Eva Schoen (1-03), Amy Hampson (0-01) , Danika Kerrigan.
