High rents put more families in the North West at risk of homelessness



High rents are hitting families in the north west with children preparing to return to school.

That’s according to Focus Ireland, which has singled out Sligo as a place where, it says, children are being severely impacted.

It follows a report from Daft.ie showing soaring rents, with an increase of about 12% in Sligo in the past 12 months.

In Donegal, they’ve gone up by over 11% to €595 a month and in Leitrim by almost 7% to €525, the lowest in the country.

Focus Ireland Sligo Manager Mary Jameson says that as September approaches, up to 1,800 children from the area are preparing to return to primary or secondary schools.

And she says many are from families forced into homelessness by the rental crisis.
