GRA gives a cautious welcome to Minister’s plans

The GRA’s representative in Sligo/Leitrim has given a cautious welcome to the announement that the site for a new police station in Sligo will be revealed in three to four weeks time.

Yesterday, the Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, which provides garda station buildings, said three sites were being considered.

Of the three sites being considered for a new garda station in Sligo, one is believed to stand out.

But Minister ‘Boxer’ Moran, while on a visit to Sligo yesterday, declined to identify that site.

But even when the new site is decided on, it will be years before the new station is built.

And the people who continue to be most affected by current conditions are the gardai who work in the present station that’s overcrowded and lacks basic facilities such as adequate parking and cells.

GRA Sligo/Leitrim representative Ray Wims has welcomed Minister Moran’s announcement about a new garda station site, but he’s cautious.

Meanwhile, Minister Moran says the fitting out of temporary offices in Finisklin in Sligo is almost finished to enable some gardai move out of the present station on Pearse Road.

The office involved in the move is believed to be that of the assistant commisisoner:
