Minister ‘Boxer’ Moran to meet Owenmore River campaigners

The Minister for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief will this afternoon meet campaigners for the drainage of the Owenmore River during his visit to Sligo.

Minister of State Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran is in Sligo today for the launch of a new guide to the archaeological heritage of the Carrowmore area and the Coolera penninsula.
Flooding of the Owenmore River is a problem that has going on for decades, with hundreds of acres left under water every year there is heavy rainfall.

Asked by Ocean FM News today about the ongoing flooding , the Minister now responsible, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, says said he would be meeting those involved with the Owenmore campaign this afternoon and learning firsthand about the problem.

However, he says he believes it involves more than a so-called minor works scheme, which have been very successful in many other areas of the country

Minister Moran thinks that on the Owenmore, a major scheme is needed.

He also indicated that the solution to the Owenmore flooding, and flooding in other rural areas, may lie in them being brought into CFRAM, the national Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management plan, which up to now has been mainly for urban areas.

Minister Moran also told Ocean FM News about a new effort he is making next month to speed up the finding of solutions to ongoing flooding problems.
