Scanlon says TDs were given assurances on BoI staff to help customers

The Sligo/Leitrim TD from Ballymote, where Bank of Ireland is to end its across-the counter service, says senior management has given assurances that staff will be on hand to help customers with their transactions.

Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says that assurance was given to local TDs at a meeting in Dublin two months ago.

Bank of Ireland says only 3% of customer transactions are now carried out over the counter.

Next month, Ulster Bank is closing its branch in Ballymote.

Tomorrow, at lunchtime, Sinn Fein is organising a protest outside the Bank of Ireland branch in the town.

Deputy Scanlon acknowledged that the banks’ move is unfortunate but he says its a development that’s happening across the country, including in Manorhamilton and Bundoran and with four banks in Mayo.
