Countess Mountbatten remembered at Mullaghmore memorial mass

There was a large turnout at the Star of the Sea Church in Mullaghmore yesterday evening for a special mass to remember Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

The Countess, Patricia Mountbatten-Brabourne, was the daughter of Lord Mountbatten, who was killed in the IRA bombing in Mullaghmore in 1979.

She herself was seriously injured in the bombing and one of her sons, Nicholas Knatchbull, was also killed.

She died last month.

Local residents, politicians, and former staff members at Classiebawn Castle all attended the ceremony.

One of the reflections was given by Liam Carey, who spent his childhood growing up in the gate lodge of Classiebawn:

The Caothaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Seamus Kilgannon, felt it was an important and fitting occasion.
