Sligo All-Stars appoint Spanish coach on three-year contract

EJs Sligo All-Stars have announced that Spaniard Alberto Garcia is to link up with the club as head coach on a three-year contract.

The experienced Garcia has been coaching professionally in Sweden for the past number of years, and will take up his new post in Sligo ahead of the new Basketball Ireland Men’s Division One season.

Shane O’Meara stepped down as head coach at the club at the end of what was a hugely successful first year back in the national league for the All-Stars last season, having reached the President’s Cup final, and finished comfortably mid-table in the league.

The addition of Garcia to the coaching team that also includes fellow Spaniard Pau Vila (pictured above) is a big boost to the squad, who are likely to have Aidan O’Shea and Ronan McGarrity available for another season.

Meanwhile, All-Stars youngster Oisin O’Reilly is part of the Ireland U18 team that departed for Estonia yesterday for the European Championships.

The Summerhill College student is part of the Irish team that will face Belgium in their opening game on Friday.
