Leitrim councillors hoping Ross will announce money for roads during expected visit

Leitrim councillors are hoping Transport Minister Shane Ross will give them a funding boost for the maintenance and improvement of roads during a visit to the county, expected before the end of September.

The possibility of the Minister visiting followed a meeting in Leinster House this week with a number of Leitrim councillors.

Among the items discussed was the need for central government funding for the Local Improvement Scheme for roads and for Community Involvement Schemes.

There are currently more than 200 roads in Leitrim awaiting approval under the LIS, with an average cost of €25,000.

Fine Gael Councillor John McCartin, who was one of the councillros who met Minister Ross, emphasised the importance of government funding for the LIS schemes:

And according to Cllr McCartin, the Minister seemed eager to visit the north west to see, first-hand, the condition of rural roads in the area.
